How Many Turns Of
The Screw?

Patrick Cannell © 2009
Even when the snow is laying on the ground
And the freeze is on,
You can feel the sun.

Even when the sparrows huddle in the trees
And the lightning spits,
Spring is in the breeze.

Yes, I know there's someone there for me,
Someone my eyes will one day see,
Someone my arms will one day hold
Or so I'm told.

Even when the cloak of darness chokes your throat
And the night is black,
Oh please don't lose hope.

Even when the pain and poison bring you down
And there is no love,
Won't you please hold out.

Yes, I know there's someone there for me,
Someone my eyes will one day see,
Someone my arms will one day hold
Or so I'm told.

How many turns of the screw do you
Have to endure, as your face turns blue?
But you are stronger than the winds you have to weather
When all the pieces of your person pull together.

How many nails through your hands and feet
Until your suffering is complete?
But there is no need for emotional gymnastics
'Cause sometimes all you have to do is change your tactics.
